Women and Cigar Smoking: A Growing Trend

In the United States, the number of women who smoke cigars has seen a dramatic increase in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 2% of women in the US now smoke cigars, compared to just one-tenth of one percent in the 1980s. A cigar is defined as a roll of tobacco wrapped in tobacco leaves or in a substance containing tobacco. Cigars differ from cigarettes in that cigarettes are a roll of tobacco wrapped in paper or in a substance that does not contain tobacco.

The three main types of cigars sold in the US are large cigars, cigars, and small cigars. Small cigars are the same size and shape as cigarettes, often include a filter, and are packaged in a similar way, but are taxed differently than cigarettes. Rather than reducing consumption, people who smoke and worry about costs could switch from cigarettes to cheaper small cigars. Black adults accounted for 35.7% of cigarette smokers and 24.2% of smokers of non-premium cigars and between 5.3 and 15.7% of smokers of other products. The rise in female cigar smoking has also led to a new wave of innovation and creativity in the tobacco industry. Women's interest in cigars has been driven by socialization when smoking cigars (49.9 - 76.6%) and the availability of flavored cigars (48.6 - 71.9%).Cigarette smoking was twice as common among smokers of cigars, cigarettes and CFs that were not top quality (58.0% — 66.0%) than among premium cigars (29.9%).

Most smokers of powdered tobacco (80.2%), cigars (71.7%) and non-premium cigars (66.4%) supported the affordability, but not among those who smoked premium cigars (22.7%).And it's women like Laurel who are really changing the tobacco industry, not only to open its doors to women, but also to allow it to be dominated by them. Currently, the consumption of one or more of the other tobacco products ranged from 64.0% for non-premium cigars to 16.8% for premium cigars. So what is the average number of cigars smoked by women in a year? Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer as it varies greatly depending on individual habits and preferences.
